What is cancer rehab?

Earthey Coaching bench.png

Cancer Rehabilitation is a specialised health intervention that involves the safe and structured prescription of tailored physical activity programmes for individuals living with or recovering from cancer. Delivered by a certified Cancer rehab & Exercise Referral Specialist, this approach is designed to support physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing during and after treatment.

Following a self referral or a referral from a healthcare professional,  personalised exercise programmes are carefully developed to reflect the individual’s diagnosis, treatment history, current health status, and energy levels. All activity is adapted to be safe, appropriate, and effective, with a strong focus on rebuilding strength, managing fatigue, improving mobility, and enhancing quality of life.

The ultimate goal of cancer exercise referral is to support recovery, restore confidence in movement, and help individuals rediscover their strength and resilience while promoting long-term, sustainable health.

What is exercise referral?

Earthey Coaching bench.png

Exercise Referral is a specialised health intervention that involves the systematic identification and prescription of tailored physical activity programs for individuals with specific medical conditions or health concerns. Typically conducted by certified professionals, such as Exercise Referral Specialists, this approach aims to improve overall well-being by addressing both physical and mental health through safe and effective exercise regimens. The process begins with a referral from a healthcare provider and involves the design of personalised exercise programs that are appropriate and adapted to the individual's specific health needs. The ultimate goal is to enhance the individual's fitness, manage chronic conditions, and promote a sustainable and healthier lifestyle.

What are the benefits of exercise with medical conditions?

Cardiovascular Conditions:

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure):

Exercise helps lower blood pressure by improving the elasticity of blood vessels and promoting overall cardiovascular health.

Coronary Heart Disease:

Regular physical activity improves circulation, reduces cholesterol levels, and strengthens the heart muscle, supporting better heart health.

Musculoskeletal Conditions:

Osteoarthritis:

Exercise strengthens muscles around joints, improves joint flexibility, and helps manage pain associated with osteoarthritis.

Rheumatoid Arthritis:

Gentle exercises maintain joint function, reduce stiffness, and improve overall mobility for individuals with rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoporosis:

Weight-bearing and resistance exercises improve bone density and reduce the risk of fractures in individuals with osteoporosis.

Simple Mechanical Back Pain:

Exercise, especially targeted core and back exercises, can alleviate pain and improve flexibility in individuals with simple mechanical back pain.

Joint Replacement:

Exercise is essential for rehabilitation after joint replacement surgeries, improving mobility, and promoting long-term joint health.

Metabolic Conditions:

Diabetes (Type 1 & Type 2):

Exercise helps regulate blood sugar levels, improves insulin sensitivity, and aids in weight management.

Obesity:

Regular physical activity, combined with a balanced diet, is crucial for weight loss, improving metabolism, and reducing obesity-related health risks.

Respiratory Conditions:

Asthma:

Regular aerobic exercise enhances lung function, improves respiratory efficiency, and contributes to better asthma management.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD):

Exercise, especially breathing exercises, improves lung capacity, reduces symptoms, and enhances overall respiratory health.

Mental Health Conditions:

Depression:

Exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, which can improve mood, reduce symptoms of depression, and contribute to overall mental well-being.

Anxiety:

Physical activity helps in managing anxiety by reducing stress hormones and promoting relaxation.

Stress-related Disorders

Exercise, particularly aerobic activities, aids in stress management, promoting mental resilience and overall well-being.
